Vai Palm Forest
One of the most popular attractions in Crete is the Vai Palm Forest. It is located east of the prefecture of Lassithi, specifically on the Cretan coast of the Carpathian sea, a little north of the village of Palaikastro and at a distance of about 24 kilometers from Sitia. To get from Heraklion to Sitia you will need about 2 hours, while from Sitia to Vai you will take another 30 minutes.
The area of the forest is 20 hectares and its name comes from the local dialect, in which the palm trees are called Vayes or Vaja → Vai. It is the largest area of Phoenix theophrastii palms that exists in Crete.
There is a large parking lot where you can leave your car and its beach is fully organized. In Vai you can enjoy your food or your coffee in the restaurant and the cafeteria that operate on the premises. You can also do water sports like banana boating, jet skiing, wakeboarding and more.
