Matala

Matala Crete

Matala is a coastal settlement of the Pitsidia community of Phaistos Municipality and is located approximately 70 km southwest of Heraklion. The beach of Matala has been inhabited since ancient times, while it became famous as a place for hippies to stay in the 60s and 70s. The village was a fishing village, while today it lives mainly from tourism. Matala was the port of Phaistos during the Minoan period and of Gortyna during the Roman period. Traces of the ancient settlement can be seen from the sea.

On the steep coast of the village there are artificial cavernous spaces (and underwater caves), carved into the rock. They are said to have been tombs. But some have rooms, stairs, windows and porches. So it seems that they were once used as residences.

In recent years, a 3-day festival by the sea has been organized every summer, with concerts by many bands, artistic activities and activities especially for children.
